Skip 280gsm when the banner is large, going outdoors for an extended period, facing strong wind, under high tension during mounting, or getting handled/reinstalled often. Saving a little on the substrate in the wrong application usually costs more later — in printing, finishing, or replacement.
340gsm: Where Most General-Purpose Orders Land
340gsm is a step up in body from 280gsm, and it’s the weight a lot of general commercial orders settle on. Common uses:

For price-sensitive markets, 340gsm often hits the practical balance between material cost, printability and handling — easier to work with on press and in finishing than 280gsm, without jumping to 440gsm pricing.
It can hold up outdoors short-term, provided the display period is short, the banner is correctly hemmed and installed, the graphic isn’t oversized, the site is reasonably sheltered, and weather isn’t unusually severe. What it shouldn’t get sold as: a long-term, heavy-duty outdoor banner, just because it’s PVC.

Ask ten distributors what their “standard outdoor banner” is, and 440gsm comes up more than any other number. It’s the default for:

Compared to the lighter grades, 440gsm generally offers better dimensional stability and a more substantial feel. 510gsm earns its place when a project needs more body, strength, or durability than 440gsm can reliably deliver. Depending on construction, that includes:

- Long-term display projects
- High-tension installations

- Blockout or black-back banners
- Applications requiring stronger finishing performance

When comparing quotations, GSM should be the opening question, not the closing one. Here’s what else belongs on the checklist.
Polyester Yarn Denier
The scrim inside the banner carries most of its structural strength. Specs like 500D × 500D or 1000D × 1000D describe the yarn used in the base fabric. A bigger denier number isn’t automatically a stronger banner on its own — it has to be read together with thread density and how consistently the mill runs its process.
Thread Density
This describes how tightly the yarns are woven — often written as 9×9, 12×12, 18×12, 20×20, or 28×28. Always confirm with the supplier how they’re measuring it, since conventions differ. Yarn size and thread density together drive tensile strength, tear resistance, dimensional stability, surface uniformity, and how the material behaves in finishing.
Laminated vs. Coated Construction
A laminated banner bonds PVC film around a polyester scrim — common for economical, standard commercial jobs. A coated banner applies PVC more directly to the base fabric, which can mean stronger adhesion between scrim and PVC layer and better suitability for demanding outdoor use, depending on the exact spec and process. Surface Quality and Ink Compatibility
A mechanically strong banner can still cause printing problems if the surface doesn’t match the ink system. Confirm compatibility with solvent, eco-solvent, UV, or latex ink before committing to volume — printer settings, curing temperature, ink load, and media profiles all factor in. GSM measures weight, not mechanical strength. Light-Transmission Requirements
A frontlit banner is built to be viewed with light falling on the printed surface. A backlit banner needs to transmit and diffuse light from behind. A blockout or black-back banner is built to block light transmission and stop older graphics or structures from showing through. The cost of a banner project isn’t just the roll price. Getting the weight wrong shows up later, in less obvious places:
Printing waste — poor stability means wrinkling, skewing, or inconsistent feed, which adds up over a long print run.
Finishing problems — light materials are harder to hem, weld, or eyelet cleanly for demanding installs; wrong heat or pressure settings compound this.
Installation failure — a banner too light for its size or environment can tear at the eyelets, stretch under tension, or fail earlier than the client expects.

- How long does it need to last? A three-day event banner and a billboard running for months aren’t the same job.
- How big is the finished graphic? Wind load, handling difficulty, and installation stress all scale up with size.
- How will it be mounted? Eyelets, hemming, webbing, pole pockets, welding, rigid frames, or high-tension mounting each stress the material differently.
- What printer and ink? The surface has to suit the system — check ink adhesion, curing, color, and roll feed.
- Does it need light control? Frontlit, backlit, blockout, black-back, or double-sided all change the answer.
Stocking Strategy for Distributors
Most distributors don’t need — or want — to stock every weight. A workable three-tier range usually covers it: 280gsm or 340gsm for temporary, indoor, and price-sensitive jobs; 440gsm as the standard commercial and general outdoor grade that covers the bulk of routine orders; and 510gsm or a coated construction held back for backlit, blockout, or otherwise demanding jobs.
